food co-op

(from Purple Porch Co-op's "Co-op 101")

Local food may be all the rage now, but it’s not another passing trend. Food grown nearby, by a farmer you know, is fresher, in season, consumes less energy to get to your table, and is ultimately healthier for you and the planet.

The Seven Cooperative Principles

The cooperative principles are guidelines by which cooperatives put their values into practice. These seven principles are:

  • Voluntary and Open Membership
  • Democratic Member Control
  • Member Economic Participation
  • Autonomy and Independence
  • Education, Training and Information
  • Cooperation among Cooperatives
  • Concern for Community
